This is the original radio broadcast describing the event. Some of my family members were there and remembered the event. My father was a child but remembered the sirens and the lights out command. And he remembered collecting artillery shells the next morning, An aunt who was then a young new mother was home alone with a new baby, My uncle had just shipped out overseas after the attack on Pearl Harbor two months earlier. So she was suddenly all alone.

The UFO went almost directly over her house around 3:30 AM IIRC. There was an ack-ack gun in her neighbor's backyard as part of the civil defense program and it started firing round after round. In the mid 1980s I tried to get her to tell me about that night. But even 45 years later, it was too upsetting for her to discuss. She just shook her head as pain, or fear... flashed in her eyes. So I dropped it.
