More info:
On a flight out of Denver. About an hour into the flight he wanted to take a picture of the sunlight in the sky. He wasn't sitting directly next to a window so he had to reach his arms forward to the one in front of him to take the photo. He didn't notice the disc shapes until after looking closely at the picture afterwards.
