Description
I ran over 80k witness statements through a fairly comprehensive sentiment and word analysis. Data contains sightings from 1906-2014 (data link (https://www.kaggle.com/datasets/NUFORC/ufo-sightings)). Attaching a few of the visuals.
\- UFO witnesses tend to describe their experiences positively. The average sentiment polarity is +0.104 (slightly positive), with 38.9% of comments being positive vs only 9.4% negative. This suggests witnesses often express wonder and amazement rather than fear.
\- The average subjectivity score is only 0.34 (on a 0-1 scale), indicating most comments are relatively factual/objective rather than emotionally charged. Witnesses tend to focus on describing *what* they saw rather than *how* they felt.
\- Lights dominate descriptions: The word "light" appears 38,764 times - nearly half of all comments mention some form of light. "Lights" (plural) appears 18,115 times, suggesting many witnesses see multiple objects.
\- Triangles are top identifiable shape: Beyond generic "light" descriptions, triangular objects (3,588 + 2,558 = 6,146 mentions) are the most commonly described distinct shape, followed by fireballs (3,025) and orbs (2,775).
\- Group sightings are significant: 9.1% of comments (7,332) suggest multiple witnesses were present (using words like "we", "friends", "family", "neighbors"). This adds credibility to reports and shows UFO sightings are often shared experiences.
