Leading up to Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, 3-8 Cav out of Gelnhausen was ordered to dispose of old 105mm M546 APERS-T "Beehive" rounds - anti-personnel shells packed with thousands of flechettes. Since the M60A3 tanks were gone, the Cav reached out to their Air Force attachments headed for the Gulf. The AC-130 gunship still carried the 105, making it the perfect match. It also gave the Cav troopers practice in calling in real air strikes.

During a training rotation at Hohenfels, the squadron scouts spotted what they thought was just another target when it lit up there thermals. They called in a strike on it... but the object wasn't what they expected. It wasn't a drone. It wasn't a balloon. It was an orb/UAP like the one that took the hellfire missile.

Did 3-8 Cav call in an air strike on a UAP?
