Seventy years ago, the residents of Lotenhulle witnessed a remarkable event. Five silver discs appeared in the sky. This week marks the anniversary of that incident, which has been commemorated with the only official UFO monument in Belgium.

On July 21, 1955, between 20 and 30 people observed five flying, silvery objects hovering above the E40 highway (formerly E5), near Lotenhulle, close to Aalter. The phenomenon lasted about ten minutes and remains unexplained to this day. No photographs or official documents have survived that could shed light on what was actually seen. Only eyewitness testimonies, passed down orally over the years, remain. The event left such a strong impression on the local community that in 2004 it was commemorated with a memorial monument.
