The Robertson Panel (1953)

🏛️ Central Intelligence Agency

A panel of scientists, convened by the CIA’s Office of Scientific Intelligence and chaired by physicist H. P. Robertson, spent four days reviewing Air Force case files and films after the 1952 wave of sightings over Washington, D.C.

Key points

  • It found no evidence of a direct threat or of anything beyond known natural and man-made causes.
  • It worried that floods of reports could clog military warning channels during a real attack.
  • It recommended educating the public to take the mystery out of sightings, a step critics later called “debunking”.
  • It also suggested keeping an eye on civilian UFO groups.

Why it matters

Many historians see this panel as the moment official policy turned from investigating UFOs to managing public interest in them.
