Description
We are honored to endorse the bipartisan Safe Airspace for Americans Act, introduced today by Reps Garcia (D-CA) and Grothman (R-WI). The legislation will provide a direct, confidential reporting channel for civilian pilots by adapting the widely trusted NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS), which publishes a public database of reports.
This legislation also:
- protects pilots against retaliation for reporting UAP
- instructs the FAA to collect and preserve data, investigate, and share the reports with AARO
- directs the FAA to develop a public engagement strategy to encourage reporting
When Ryan Graves, Americans for Safe Aerospace executive director, testified before the House Oversight Committee in July, he spoke on behalf of dozens of civilian pilots who reached out to ASA with their accounts and he called on Congress to provide a confidential reporting method for UAP and protections for commercial pilots.
We believe this legislation is a historic step forwards for ending UAP stigma against pilots, and a pragmatic step for improving aviation safety and helping to close our domain awareness gap in the gray zone between 40,000 feet and space.
This reporting mechanism was endorsed by the NASA UAP Independent Study Team in their final report.
We are excited to see this bill introduced and we will be working hard to push it forward. We hope you will support it too.
