Tonight at 9:40 pm EST, I boarded Delta Flight 888 flying from Detroit, MI to NY (LaGuardia Airport). Approximately 20-25 minutes into the flight, myself and the passenger sitting next to me in the window seat noticed a bright glow emitting itself from outside the aircraft. We were flying on an Airbus A321 and when we looked out the window, noticed what I can only describe as extremally large lights emitting themselves from the clouds below us at maybe 10,000-15,000 feet.

Astonished, we quickly grabbed out phones and too snap shots of what we saw. To best describe it, there were colors of what I would say were "hot pink/purple, yellow and then green, going counter clockwise from our viewing angle looking down. As other passengers started to notice it as well, I thought to check the in flight monitor on the TV to see where we were on the map. At the time, it seemed we were over Lake Erie at approximately 20,000-21,000 feet and climbing. The lights were stationary, not moving or pulsating or emitting anything other than really bright light (see video). I have never seen anything like this before and a friend of mine who I shared the images with said I should take it to reddit for answers.

When we landed, the FIRST thing I asked the First Officer as I was deboarding "what the heck were those lights over Lake Erie at 21,000 feet earlier when we were about 20 minutes into the flight"?

His response seemed like it was something out a movie--"oh those were greenhouses". I responded to him "you mean greenhouse gases"? "Yes, that what I was told they were".

To reiterate, this was at night, maybe around 10-10:15 EST flying over a body of water. There was no city below, nothing that would emit these sorts of luminary effects, no signs of spot lights; nothing. I dont know how greenhouse gases could do something like this, not even aurora borealis look like this.
