Description

Just wanted to share my two personal sightings (2nd more recent sighting next post). First, my oldest personally observed and probably one of the most widely publicly observed but unknown sightings in history. To the best of my recollection it was around 1963/64. I was at a drive-in movie with my older brother. It was still daylight as we were waiting for the movie to start at dark. Above/left of the screen I noticed a still, large silver object in the sky. It was shaped like a narrow football with pointed ends. It was difficult to judge the distance but from my experienced observation (amateur astronomy) I judged it to be large but very distant, maybe two to three football fields in length. There was what looked like a trail of puffy cloud or smoke zig-zagging on the right of the UFO body, the rest of the sky was clear. As I mentioned this was a drive-in theater, so you know there were many witnesses. There was a convertible parked next to us with three men in it. I asked them what they thought the object was. I remember the surprising response as the man wearing the flight jacket answered, "I can tell you this, I have been in the Air Force for several years and I have never seen anything like it". This was significant because Tucson, AZ (the location) was home of one of the US's largest Air Force bases, Davis-Monthan and had a large Air Force population. I then found the drive-in theaters pay phone and called our daily newspaper to find out if they had any reports. It was a short call to no avail. When I turned back to the scene the UFO was gone. When I inquired those around me, they said it just seemed to disappear. The next day I searched the newspaper. There was one obscurely placed paragraph in the paper saying something like "Last night an unknown object was seen over Tucson" and that was all!

My rough depiction of sighting to fill post requirement (https://preview.redd.it/71m254c8hds81.jpg?width=1533&format=pjpg&auto…)

Some background: A few years later I was recruited as a volunteer by what was then known as the U.S. Navel Observatory to do astronomy observations in the Tucson area.
