Description

It's infuriating to have to address the completely illogical notion that military drones would operate by shining bright lights, making themselves obvious targets. The idea is fundamentally nonsensical and demonstrates a misunderstanding of their purpose in warfare.

The facts are that the entire operational purpose of a military surveillance or combat drone, whether it is American, Russian, or from any other nation with this technology, is centered on STEALTH and avoiding detection. Announcing its presence with a bright light would be the tactical equivalent of a sniper wearing a strobe light.

Drones like the MQ-9 Reaper or RQ-4 Global Hawk fly at altitudes between 20,000 and 60,000 feet. At these heights, they are virtually invisible to the naked eye from the ground. Their purpose is to see, not to be seen.

These are not commercial drones with FAA-mandated lights for civilian airspace safety. In a combat environment, all non-essential lights are extinguished. They are designed with shapes and materials meant to minimize their radar and thermal signatures. Intentionally adding a bright, visible light source would defeat the entire purpose of this sophisticated and expensive engineering.

The primary roles of these drones are Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance (ISR), and precision strikes. Success in these missions is predicated on the element of surprise and the ability to gather information or engage a target without the enemy's knowledge. A drone that shines so fucking bright that everyone saw it was there has already failed its mission and compromised a multi-million dollar military asset.

There are no documented instances in the history of U.S. drone warfare where an aircraft was sent to a hostile area with the intention of being brightly visible. The procedure is to be hidden, operate from an undetectable altitude, use advanced sensors to observe the area, and then either leave undetected or engage a target with precision before its presence is widely known.

So anyone who still thinks this are drones in Europe is a fucking idiot.
