Description

Nearly every night now, throughout the summer here in Michigan, I have been taking 30 second exposures of the night sky with my iPhone laying flat, facing up, to capture anything streaking across the darkness. I look for any irregularities in the paths of the light streaks that I capture, but so far, I haven’t seen anything that can’t be explained as either a satellite, high flying jet or meteor. But I keep at it. It’s a simple method of monitoring that anyone can do, and if enough people did this, someone is bound to get something interesting.
This was taken at 9:44pm Sept 15, 2025 over Ionia, Michigan. It shows a satellite (?) streaking across the upper left of the frame.
I’ve been taking photos most of my life and am amazed at the sensitivity built into the iPhone’s camera sensor. I’ve also experimented with time-lapse videos and hope to capture something interesting eventually.
