Donald Trump (born 1946) is the 45th and 47th president of the United States. He has made a number of public comments about UFOs, usually saying he is not a believer while hinting that he knows more. In February 2026 he ordered federal agencies to identify and release government files on UFOs, UAP and extraterrestrial life, which led to a series of public releases from May 2026.[1][2][3]
First term

In an interview with George Stephanopoulos of ABC News released in June 2019, Trump was asked about reports of Navy pilots seeing UFOs. He said he had had "one very brief meeting" on the subject. Asked whether he believed the reports, he said not particularly. Asked whether he would know about evidence of extraterrestrial life, he said the pilots would know and that "you'll be the first to know".[1]
In a Father's Day interview with his son Donald Trump Jr., released by his re-election campaign in June 2020, Trump was asked whether he would reveal more about Roswell. He replied that he would not say what he knew about it but that it was very interesting. Asked whether he might declassify the information one day, he said he would have to think about it.[2]
2024 campaign
On YouTuber Logan Paul's podcast Impaulsive in June 2024, Trump said he had met military pilots who told him of objects moving far faster than their fighter jets. One, he said, described something round going about four times faster than his plane. Trump said he could not call himself a believer but that serious people had told him they saw very strange things.[4]
2026 order to release files

On 19 February 2026, hours after criticising former President Barack Obama for remarks on a podcast about the possibility of alien life, Trump announced on social media that he was directing the Pentagon and other agencies to identify and release files on alien and extraterrestrial life, UAP and UFOs.[3] He said he was acting because of tremendous public interest. Speaking to reporters, he said he did not know whether aliens were real and had no opinion on it.[3] Members of Congress including Anna Paulina Luna and Tim Burchett had pressed for such a release.[5]
The first batch of about 160 files was published on 8 May 2026 on a Department of War website, under a program called the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters (PURSUE). Further releases followed through 2026.[5][6] The Pentagon and Trump said the files did not confirm extraterrestrial life. Skeptics and scientists said they contained little that was new.[5]
