Filer became a MUFON state director in New Jersey and published Filer's Files, a weekly online collection of UFO reports. He promoted the story that in January 1978 a small alien was shot and killed near Fort Dix and recovered at McGuire Air Force Base, saying he was on duty there at the time. He also said he chased a UFO over England in 1962. His Fort Dix–McGuire story is widely doubted, and the documents linked to it have not been confirmed.
