Nellis Air Force Base is a large U.S. Air Force base in the northeast of the Las Vegas Valley, Nevada, known for advanced combat training such as the "Red Flag" exercises. It supports the vast Nevada Test and Training Range, which surrounds the secret Groom Lake facility known as Area 51, and is often mentioned in UFO lore for that reason.[1][2]
History

The base was built in 1941 as Las Vegas Army Airfield and began flight training on 20 December 1941. On 30 April 1950 it was named after Lieutenant William Harrell Nellis, a pilot killed in action in Europe in 1944.[1]
Role

Nellis covers about 4,600 hectares (11,300 acres). It hosts Exercise Red Flag, a series of realistic air-combat exercises for American and allied air forces held over the Nevada Test and Training Range, and is the home of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds aerobatic team. The base also supports the Tonopah Test Range, where much secret aircraft testing has taken place.[1]
UFO lore

The ranges run from Nellis include remote and restricted areas such as Groom Lake (Area 51) and Papoose Lake, where Bob Lazar claimed to have worked on alien craft at a site he called S-4. Reports of strange lights in the area are often attributed to classified aircraft tests and military exercises.[2][3]
