On 16 May 2022, the day before the first open congressional hearing on UAP in more than fifty years, Politico reported that unnamed officials had described a faction inside the Pentagon and intelligence agencies that guarded UFO information with a "Skull and Bones-type vibe" and no accountability. Skull and Bones is a famous secret society at Yale University.[1][2]

The report

According to the report, some Pentagon insiders were protecting very interesting information from the public, and officials said a "forcing mechanism" would be needed to make the group share its secrets with Congress. Officials also complained that genuine UAP were rare — perhaps "five things out of 5,000" — and were lumped in with mundane reports, and that superiors tended to dismiss the subject as "air trash".[1]

The report came as the House Intelligence Committee's counter-terrorism subcommittee prepared to hear from Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence Ronald Moultrie and Deputy Director of Naval Intelligence Scott Bray on 17 May 2022 — the first such public hearing since 1966. The push followed the 2017 revelations about AATIP and the Pentagon's creation of a UAP office in November 2021.[1][2]

The officials were anonymous, and Politico did not name anyone in the alleged faction. The claim of a hidden faction fits a long tradition in UFO lore, from Majestic 12 to the "Collins Elite", and added to pressure on the officials who testified the next day. The idea later resurfaced in the 2023 claims of whistleblower David Grusch.[2][3]
