The Stephenville UFO sightings were reports by dozens of residents of Stephenville, Dublin and nearby towns in Erath County, Texas, on the evening of 8 January 2008, of large, bright, fast-moving lights. After first saying none of its aircraft were in the area, the U.S. Air Force acknowledged that ten F-16 fighters had been training there, and skeptics attribute the sightings largely to the jets and flares they dropped.[1][2]

Witnesses, including a local pilot and business owner, Steve Allen, and a county constable, reported a very large object, which some estimated at a mile long, with bright lights that changed configuration, moving silently and sometimes at great speed, and apparently pursued by military jets. The story received national media attention.[1][3]

Air Force response

Officials at first said no Air Force aircraft had been in the area that night. On 23 January 2008 the 301st Fighter Wing, based at Naval Air Station Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base, corrected this, saying ten F-16s had been conducting training in the military operating areas near Stephenville that evening.[2][4]

Radar data and explanations

The Mutual UFO Network obtained Federal Aviation Administration radar data through Freedom of Information Act requests and published a report arguing that it showed an unidentified target moving toward the restricted airspace over President George W. Bush's ranch at Crawford, with fighters responding. Skeptics argued that the radar returns were consistent with ordinary aircraft and anomalies, and that many witnesses described F-16s using afterburners and dropping illumination flares, which can look like a row of hovering lights. An Air Force spokesman said no F-16 pilots reported similar sightings.[1][2][5]

The case was revisited in the Netflix series Encounters (2023).[3]
