Eduard "Billy" Meier (born 1937) is a Swiss man who says he has been in contact since childhood with human-looking extraterrestrials he calls the Plejaren. In the 1970s he produced many photographs and films of what he said were their "beamships". Skeptics and most ufologists regard his evidence as faked.[1]
Life
Meier was born in Bülach, near Zürich, and left school early. As a young man he served a prison sentence, escaped, and briefly joined the French Foreign Legion. He lost his left arm in a bus accident in Turkey in 1965.[1]
His claims
Meier says his contacts began in 1942, when he was five, with an elderly alien named Sfath, and continued with a being called Asket. He said they stopped in 1964 and resumed on 28 January 1975 with a woman named Semjase and later others.[1] He founded an organisation, known by its German initials FIGU, around these contacts, with a centre in Switzerland.[1] He has also claimed to be the latest in a line of prophets.[1]
The evidence
Meier's photographs show what he says are alien craft over the Swiss countryside, and he also presented metal samples, sound recordings and films.[1] In 1997 his former wife, Kalliope, told interviewers that the craft were models he made from household items such as dustbin lids, and that the stories were made up. She also said that pictures of two alien women were really of members of the American dance troupe the Golddiggers, which was later confirmed: the images came from The Dean Martin Show.[1]
Criticism
Besides the photographic evidence, critics have pointed to prophecies attributed to Meier that repeatedly blame Jews for future atrocities.[1] A sympathetic 1987 documentary, Contact, presented his story without skeptical voices.[1]
