Bonnybridge is a village in the Falkirk council area of central Scotland, about 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Falkirk. Since the early 1990s it has been known as a UFO hotspot. It lies at the centre of the so-called Falkirk Triangle, an area where hundreds of sightings have been reported.[1][2][3]
The village

Bonnybridge grew during the Industrial Revolution around paper mills, sawmills, chemical works, brickworks, distilling and iron foundries, served by the Forth and Clyde Canal and nearby railways. A well-preserved section of the Roman Antonine Wall lies to the south-east. The village had about 6,870 residents at the 2001 census.[1]
The sightings

The wave of reports began in 1992, when a man named James Walker said he had seen a star-shaped object hovering above a road.[2][3] According to Vice, more than 600 sightings were reported between 1992 and 1994. Residents filled town hall meetings to discuss them, and film crews arrived from as far away as Russia.[3] In 1993 local officials held a public meeting about the reports. It reached no conclusion, though alcohol was mentioned as a possible cause of some sightings.[2] Time magazine, which listed Bonnybridge among six UFO hot spots around the world in 2011, said the Scottish government received more than 300 sighting reports a year from the area.[2]
The Falkirk Triangle is generally described as the area between Stirling, Fife and the edge of Edinburgh.[2]
Billy Buchanan

Local councillor Billy Buchanan became the best-known advocate of the sightings. He said he had contacted every prime minister since 1992, together with the Scottish ufologist Malcolm Robinson, asking for an investigation.[3] He recalled that a local MP had warned him that raising the subject would be electoral suicide.[3] In 2005 he told The Scotsman that he had no doubt Bonnybridge was part of something exciting.[2]
Explanations
Skeptics have pointed out that Bonnybridge lies under the flight paths into Edinburgh and Glasgow airports, and that there is a commercial airfield a couple of miles away at Cumbernauld.[3] Interest declined after the 1990s, but the village's reputation has continued, with skywatches organised during a paranormal festival in nearby Stirling.[3]
