The John Lennon UFO sighting took place on the night of Friday 23 August 1974, when the former Beatle John Lennon and his partner May Pang said they saw a UFO from the terrace of their penthouse apartment in New York City. Lennon noted the sighting in the packaging of his album Walls and Bridges and referred to it in his song "Nobody Told Me".[1][2]
Background

In 1974, during a period of separation from Yoko Ono, Lennon lived with May Pang. In early July they moved into a penthouse at 434 East 52nd Street in Manhattan, near Sutton Place. Lennon was then recording Walls and Bridges at the Record Plant.[1][2] The terrace, reached by climbing out of the kitchen window, had a panoramic view towards Queens.[2]
The sighting

Pang wrote that she had just stepped out of the shower when Lennon, standing naked on the terrace, called her urgently to come and look. She said they saw a saucer-shaped object surrounded by bright white lights gliding through the sky, and watched it through a telescope.[1] According to Pang's account in the Wikipedia summary, the circular object passed silently less than 100 feet away.[2] In a later interview she said it moved slowly, sometimes hovering, and then drifted towards Brooklyn before going straight up and disappearing. Pang tried to photograph it, but the film came back blank.[1]
Lennon told the photographer Bob Gruen, who suggested calling the police. Lennon laughed off the idea of telling the newspapers that John Lennon had seen a flying saucer.[2] Gruen called the local police precinct, which said three other people had reported a sighting, and the Daily News reported that five people had reported a sighting in the same part of the city.[2] Lennon also made a sketch of the object.[1] Pang has said that Lennon later told her he wished it had taken them away with it.[1]
Legacy
Lennon included a note in the Walls and Bridges lyrics booklet saying that he had seen a UFO on 23 August 1974 at 9 o'clock. He gave his fullest account in the November 1974 issue of Andy Warhol's Interview magazine.[1] His song "Nobody Told Me", released after his death in 1984, mentions UFOs over New York.[1][2] Interviewed in 2011, Pang said she still believed they had seen a UFO.[1]
