The Tinley Park lights were sightings of three red lights in a triangular formation over Tinley Park, Oak Forest and nearby suburbs south of Chicago, Illinois, on several nights between 2004 and 2006. Many people saw and filmed them, and the case became one of the best-known UFO reports in Illinois. No explanation has been confirmed.[1][2]
Sightings
The first and best-known sighting was on the night of 21 August 2004. Three red lights hung in a triangle for almost half an hour before going out one by one. Calls came in to the National UFO Reporting Center describing the same lights, and people leaving an Ozzy Osbourne concert at the Tweeter Center saw them from their cars.[2] Similar lights were reported on Halloween night, 31 October 2004, when trick-or-treaters on whole blocks were said to have watched them, and again on 1 October 2005 and 31 October 2006.[1][2]
Investigation
Witnesses photographed and filmed the lights. Some ufologists argued that the video showed the lights keeping their triangular shape as if attached to a single dark object.[1] Sam Maranto, state director of the Illinois Mutual UFO Network, called it a sighting seen by a great many people and argued that the lights were visible from at least 12 miles away, which he said ruled out a hoax. He also claimed that a video showed objects flying in and out of the lights.[2]
In the media
The case was examined on Dateline NBC on 18 May 2008 and in the episode "Invasion Illinois" of the History channel series UFO Hunters, first shown on 29 October 2008.[1] Chicago magazine featured it in a 2007 article on Illinois UFO cases.[2]
