Area 6 is a section of the Nevada National Security Site whose airstrip and hangars, about 12 miles northeast of Area 51 on Yucca Flat, drew public attention in March 2016 after reporting by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.[1][2]
The site
Satellite images show a mile-long asphalt runway with a handful of hangars with clamshell doors at one end. The area is fenced off but can be seen from the road by visitors touring Yucca Flat, where hundreds of nuclear tests were carried out.[1][2]
Official explanation
Darwin Morgan, a spokesman for the National Nuclear Security Administration, told the Review-Journal that the Yucca airstrip is used by the Defense Department and the Department of Homeland Security to test their own sensors. Morgan said restricting the area reduced the chance of the surroundings being observed. Analysts suggested the hangars could house up to 15 MQ-9 Reaper drones, and that the government might be testing camera arrays mounted on such aircraft.[1]
Speculation
Area 6's location near Area 51 and its secrecy have made it a subject of UFO speculation. The official description, drone and sensor testing, fits the site's layout and the region's long role in classified flight testing.[1][2]
