According to the testimony, in July 2022 a government response to a Freedom of Information Act request suggested that files existed relating to UFOs and a 1962 nuclear test, but said they needed review by subject-matter experts before any release. The response was shared online by a researcher.[1]
The context

The request related to rumours that a UFO was affected or brought down during one of the 1962 high-altitude nuclear tests over the Pacific in Operation Fishbowl, such as Starfish Prime in July or Bluegill Triple Prime in October. Luis Elizondo had been asked about such a retrieval in 2021. The claim was later developed in detail by Australian intelligence officer Geoff Cruickshank in 2024.[2][3]
Classified film
The tests were heavily filmed, and some footage remains classified: one account notes that a classified portion of the Bluegill Triple Prime footage is to remain so until 2062 under a Department of Energy ruling. Researcher Douglas Dean Johnson, who examined the declassified material, said FOIA requests he made to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency went unanswered.[3][4]
Assessment

A response saying records need expert review does not confirm their content; agencies commonly say this about nuclear test records, which contain sensitive weapons data. No documents linking the tests to UFOs have been released, and Johnson concluded that the "UFO knockdown" story rested on misread footage and ordinary records.[2][3]
