Ed Balocco was a U.S. Marine Corps fighter pilot who, on the night of 19 February 1953, was scrambled from the Marine Corps air station at Cherry Point to investigate an unknown target near Edenton, North Carolina.
The encounter
Balocco reported that he closed on an object with red and white lights, which he described as disc-shaped. He said it came within about 350 feet of his aircraft before pulling away at high speed. The case was reported to Project Blue Book and later collected by researchers studying pilot encounters. It is one of many 1950s cases in which military jets were sent to intercept unknown objects tracked on radar.
