In The Case for the UFO (1955), Jessup argued that UFOs might be alien craft using unknown propulsion and speculated about gravity. In 1955–56 he received letters from a man calling himself Carlos Allende (Carl Meredith Allen), describing a 1943 Navy experiment in Philadelphia that made a ship invisible. In 1956 the Office of Naval Research received an annotated copy of Jessup's book, later reprinted by the Varo company. Jessup died in Florida in 1959, ruled a suicide, which fuelled conspiracy stories.
