Max Spiers (1976 – 16 July 2016), also known as Maxwell Bates-Spiers, was a British UFO investigator and conspiracy theorist whose sudden death in Warsaw, Poland, prompted conspiracy theories before inquiries attributed it to drugs and pneumonia.[1][2]
Life
Spiers was interested in UFOs and conspiracy theories from an early age. He spoke at conspiracy conferences and claimed unusual experiences, including out-of-body episodes and having been made a "supersoldier" at birth as part of a secret program; other conspiracy theorists doubted these claims.[1]
Death
Spiers died on 16 July 2016 while visiting a friend in Warsaw. His mother said she had been worried about his mental health and that he had become involved with the wrong people, and some fellow conspiracy theorists suggested he had been killed. Polish authorities opened an investigation in August 2016, and a British inquest was opened in December 2016 and adjourned while the coroner waited for a Polish report. In January 2019 his death was attributed to drugs and pneumonia; The Guardian reported that he had died after taking an anti-anxiety drug.[1][2][3]
Documentary
The BBC made a multi-part short documentary about his death, Fractured: The Death of Max Spiers, released in February 2017.[1]
