Michael D. Swords is an American biologist and retired professor of natural science at Western Michigan University. He has been a leading historian of government UFO investigations since the 1980s.
Work

Swords served on the board of the Center for UFO Studies and as editor of the Journal of UFO Studies. With Robert Powell and others, he wrote UFOs and Government: A Historical Inquiry (2012), a detailed, document-based history of how the U.S. and other governments handled the subject from the 1940s onward. He has researched the 1948 "Estimate of the Situation", finding indirect evidence for Edward Ruppelt's account, and the role of figures such as Dewey Fournet. He is known for careful use of original records.
