Description
Let me preface this by saying that I am 100% a believer, BUT, I also do what I can to verify a claim to the best of my ability before simply accepting it as fact. I understand there are some things that simply cannot be explained, but where there is room - I like to explore that.
1. The first image shows 3 images together ( a theme you will see throughout ).
On the left is the reported image of the 3IAtlas object.
2. The middle image is a picture of the NCG 4643 Hubble galaxy image from Nasa, that was manipulated by me. I took the real image of 4643, flipped it horizontally so it was facing basically the same direction as the 3IAtlas image. Added a black colored layer underneath and use the eraser with some transparency to fade the TR and BL corners a bit. Changed the brightness and contrast a bit and finally exported it as a jpg reducing quality to 70.
3. The image on the right is a real image of NCG 4643 galaxy from Nasa.
TL;DR: A comprehensive forensic analysis found that this image was heavily edited—primarily using Adobe Photoshop—with an estimated 85-95% confidence of manipulation. Multiple forensic techniques, including metadata inspection, statistical profiling, and pattern analysis, were used to reach this conclusion.
Key Findings
* Photoshop Metadata: The image contains embedded Photoshop tags (1028 and 1061), which prove it was opened and saved using Adobe Photoshop. \*cHeavy Noise Reduction: Severe smoothing and uniform noise patterns indicate use of aggressive denoising filters or AI-based enhancement.
* Statistical Anomalies: Analysis of color distribution, histogram, and Benford's Law all show values incompatible with natural, unprocessed photographs.
* Pattern Repetition: The image has over 12,000 block pairs with extremely high similarity—far more than expected—suggesting cloning, content-aware fill, or AI upscaling.
* Color and Contrast Adjustments: Extreme color reduction, abnormal channel correlations, and significant contrast changes point to algorithmic manipulation.
What Was NOT Found
\*No evidence the image is fully AI-generated (natural lens characteristics like chromatic aberration are present). \*No obvious composite or large-scale geometric manipulation (edges and structure remain consistent and natural).
Conclusion
This image originated as a photograph but has undergone extensive, multi-stage digital processing. It should not be considered "authentic" for forensic, scientific, or journalistic purposes. Use caution if authenticity is required—the manipulation is both deep and well-supported by technical analysis.
FULL REPORT
Digital Image Forensic Analysis Report
Summary
This image has been ALTERED through post-processing software. The analysis reveals Adobe Photoshop metadata embedded within the file, along with multiple technical indicators of digital manipulation including heavy noise reduction, statistical anomalies, and extensive pattern repetition. The manipulation confidence level is assessed at 85-95%. Image Properties The analyzed image is a 956×1080 pixel RGB JPEG file containing limited EXIF metadata but crucially includes Adobe Photoshop tags 1028 and 1061 which definitively prove the image has been opened and processed in Photoshop. The metadata tags indicate the image was saved with Photoshop-specific information, though most camera-specific EXIF data has been stripped or was never present.
Basic Characteristics:
* Format: JPEG with JFIF version 1.1
* Resolution: 72×72 DPI
* Color depth: 8-bit per channel
* Dynamic range: 18-238 (out of 0-255 possible)
* Unique colors: Only 9,226 out of 1,032,480 total pixels (0.89% diversity)
Metadata Analysis Finding CRITICAL FINDING: Photoshop Metadata Detected The presence of Photoshop-specific metadata tags is irrefutable evidence of editing. Tag 1028 and tag 1061 are proprietary Adobe Photoshop metadata fields that only appear when images are processed through Adobe's software. Additionally, the minimal EXIF data suggests either:
* The original camera metadata was intentionally stripped
* The image originated from a source without standard camera EXIF
* Multiple save operations removed original metadata
Histogram and Color Distribution Analysis
Statistical Anomalies Detected: The histogram analysis reveals highly abnormal statistical characteristics inconsistent with natural photography:
* Extreme skewness: Red (3.89), Green (3.33), Blue (2.75) - all channels show severe positive skew
* Abnormal kurtosis: Red (21.68), Green (14.74), Blue (9.31) - indicating heavy pixel value concentration
* Histogram gaps: 46-80 zero bins per channel, suggesting quantization or posterization effects
* Limited color palette: Only 9,226 unique colors for over 1 million pixels represents severe color reduction
Natural photographs typically exhibit broader color distributions with lower skewness and kurtosis values. These metrics indicate algorithmic color processing or compression.
JPEG Compression Artifact Analysis The image shows minimal traditional JPEG blocking artifacts, with blocking ratios of 0.65 (vertical) and 0.72 (horizontal), both well below the 1.0 threshold that would indicate visible 8×8 block boundaries. This suggests either:
* High-quality JPEG compression was used
* Processing algorithms smoothed away typical JPEG artifacts
* The image underwent noise reduction that eliminated compression traces
Error Level Analysis (ELA) Equivalent Testing: ELA works by re-compressing an image at a known quality level and analyzing differences to detect areas with different compression histories. My simulated ELA analysis found uniform compression levels across regions (variance: 0.022), indicating consistent processing throughout the image. However, this uniformity itself can be suspicious when combined with other manipulation indicators, as composite images typically show variable compression levels.
Noise Pattern and Texture Analysis
SEVERE SMOOTHING DETECTED
* High-frequency grain standard deviation: 0.54 (threshold for natural images: >2.0)
* Local contrast mean: 0.45 (threshold for natural images: >10.0)
* Noise consistency: Uniform across regions (variance: 0.45)
These measurements indicate heavy noise reduction or AI-based smoothing algorithms were applied. Natural photographs contain sensor noise and film grain that manifests as high-frequency content. The near-complete absence of such noise (0.54 std dev) is characteristic of:
* Aggressive denoising filters
* AI-based image enhancement
* Multiple compression cycles
* Synthetic generation
Despite this smoothing, texture analysis shows normal scale-dependent patterns (ratio: 2.45), suggesting the underlying structure remains photographic rather than fully synthetic.
Frequency Domain Analysis (FFT)
SYNTHETIC PATTERNS DETECTED Fast Fourier Transform analysis revealed:
* 1,033 strong frequency peaks in the 99.99th percentile
* Radial frequency distribution with abnormal concentration
* Multiple periodic components suggesting algorithmic processing
Natural images typically show smooth frequency falloff without discrete peaks. The detection of over 1,000 strong frequency peaks indicates either:
* Repetitive patterns from texture synthesis
* Compression artifacts from extreme processing
* Upscaling or enhancement algorithms
* Possible AI generation or enhancement
However, the high-to-mid frequency ratio (0.208) falls within natural ranges, suggesting the image retains some photographic authenticity at its core.
Edge Detection and Structural Analysis
Edge analysis using Sobel and Canny detection algorithms shows:
* Consistent edge distribution across regions (variance: 0.85)
* 9.8% edge density - moderate level appropriate for the scene
* Normal edge sharpness variation (CV: 1.34)
* Natural asymmetry - no artificial mirroring detected
The edge characteristics pass authenticity tests, indicating any manipulation preserved structural coherence without introducing obvious geometric inconsistencies or copy-paste artifacts that would manifest as unnatural edge patterns.
RGB Channel Correlation Analysis
HIGH CORRELATION - PROCESSING INDICATOR
* Red-Green correlation: 0.978
* Red-Blue correlation: 0.948
* Green-Blue correlation: 0.988
* Mean correlation: 0.971 Natural photographs typically show channel correlations between 0.85-0.95.
The exceptionally high correlations (>0.97) indicate:
* Color grading or color balance adjustments
* Noise reduction affecting all channels uniformly
* Monochromatic or near-monochromatic scene
* Synthetic processing
The combination with other indicators points toward heavy processing rather than natural scene characteristics.
Principal Component Analysis (PCA)
EXTREME COLOR REDUCTION PCA reveals that 98.34% of color variance is captured in the first principal component, with only 1.51% in PC2 and 0.15% in PC3. This extreme concentration indicates:
* Severely limited color palette (confirmed by only 9,226 unique colors)
* Possible color quantization or posterization
* Monochromatic scene with limited color range
* AI upscaling artifacts
Natural color photographs typically distribute variance more evenly across principal components (PC1: 70-85%, PC2: 10-20%, PC3: 5-10%).
Benford's Law Statistical Analysis
SIGNIFICANT DEVIATION FROM NATURAL DISTRIBUTION Bedford’s Law states that in naturally occurring datasets, the first significant digit follows a logarithmic distribution, with "1" appearing \~30% of the time and "9" appearing \~4.6% of the time. This law has proven highly effective in detecting image manipulation.
Observed vs. Expected First Digit Distribution:
* Digit 1: 5.4% (expected: 30.1%) - 24.7% deficit
* Digit 5: 34.7% (expected: 7.9%) - 26.8% surplus
* Digit 6: 41.1% (expected: 6.7%) - 34.4% surplus
Chi-square statistic: 3.36 (threshold for manipulation: >2.0) This significant deviation indicates the pixel value distribution has been algorithmically altered, consistent with processing operations like:
* Level adjustments
* Curve modifications
* Color mapping
* Noise reduction affecting value distributions
Clone Detection and Copy-Move Analysis
EXTENSIVE PATTERN REPETITION DETECTED Analysis of 16×16 pixel blocks revealed 12,695 similar block pairs with correlation >0.98, including multiple pairs with perfect correlation (1.000000) separated by 40-318 pixels. This represents an extraordinary level of repetition.
Possible explanations:
1. Clone-stamping or copy-move manipulation - content copied from one region to another
2. Extreme compression artifacts - heavy processing creating uniform regions
3. Low-contrast scene - dark sky naturally producing similar blocks
4. AI processing - neural network upscaling creating repetitive patterns
While the uniformly dark background could naturally produce some similar blocks, the quantity (12,695 pairs) and perfect correlations exceed normal levels, indicating probable algorithmic manipulation or enhancement.
AI/GAN Generation Detection
Mixed Indicators: Natural characteristics present:
* Normal frequency distribution dropoff (ratio: 0.208)
* Balanced channel variance (ratio: 1.54)
* Natural texture variation across random patches (0.98)
* Chromatic aberration preserved (edge alignment: 0.77) Processing artifacts:
* Severely reduced high-frequency content (0.54)
* Very high channel correlation (0.97)
* Limited color diversity (9,226 unique colors)
* Extensive block repetition
Assessment: The image is likely not fully AI-generated but has undergone heavy AI-based enhancement or processing. The preservation of chromatic aberration and natural frequency characteristics suggests photographic origin, but subsequent processing has removed natural noise and introduced synthetic smoothness characteristic of AI denoising or upscaling algorithms.
Luminance and Brightness Analysis
Scene Characteristics:
* Mean luminance: 68.4 (very dark overall)
* 91% of pixels in shadow range (0-85)
* Only 0.22% highlights (170-255)
* No clipping detected in blacks or whites
Bright Object Analysis:
* Luminous streak/object present (top 5% brightness)
* Neutral color temperature (Blue/Red ratio: 1.13)
* Natural bloom/halo gradient around bright areas (25.3 luminance difference) Background uniformity: The dark background shows extremely uniform texture (coefficient of variation: 0.049), suggesting either:
* Night sky naturally lacking detail
* Smoothing algorithms reducing background noise
* Artificial background generation
Chromatic Aberration and Lens Characteristics
NATURAL LENS CHARACTERISTICS PRESERVED Chromatic aberration analysis shows:
* Normal channel misalignment (0.77 edge alignment)
* RGB channels show expected separation at high-contrast edges
* No artificial pixel-perfect registration This is a positive indicator suggesting the image originated from a real optical system rather than being fully synthetically generated. Real camera lenses produce chromatic aberration due to different wavelengths focusing at slightly different points, while computer-generated images typically have perfectly aligned color channels unless aberration is deliberately simulated.
Resampling and Scaling Detection
NO SIGNIFICANT RESAMPLING ARTIFACTS
* Gradient periodicity: 5 peaks (vertical and horizontal)
* No interpolation artifacts detected
* JPEG grid boundaries show normal variation The absence of resampling artifacts suggests the image has not undergone significant scaling operations, or any scaling was performed with high-quality algorithms that minimized detectible artifacts.

Forensic Conclusion This image has been DEFINITIVELY MANIPULATED in Adobe Photoshop with HIGH confidence (85-95%). The forensic evidence indicates: Primary Alterations:
1. Heavy noise reduction/smoothing algorithms - evidenced by grain std dev of 0.54
2. Color grading and tonal adjustments - indicated by Benford's Law violations and extreme skewness
3. Possible AI-based enhancement - suggested by over-smoothing and high channel correlation
4. Contrast and brightness adjustments - shown in histogram modifications
5. Potential localized cloning or content-aware fill - indicated by 12,695 similar block pairs
Technical Profile: The image appears to be a genuine photograph (based on chromatic aberration and frequency characteristics) that underwent extensive post-processing. The processing likely included:
* Multiple noise reduction passes
* AI-based upscaling or enhancement
* Color correction and grading
* Possible background manipulation
* Export through Photoshop workflow
Not Detected:
* Full synthetic/AI generation (chromatic aberration and core structure remain photographic)
* Obvious composite/splicing (consistent compression and edge patterns)
* Geometric manipulation (natural asymmetry preserved)
