The alien autopsy film was a black-and-white film released in 1995 by British music producer Ray Santilli, said to show the autopsy of an alien recovered after the 1947 Roswell incident. It was broadcast worldwide and drew huge audiences. In 2006 Santilli and his partner admitted that they had staged it.[1][2]
Broadcast
Santilli said he had obtained the footage from a retired military cameraman. Fox television broadcast it on 28 August 1995 as Alien Autopsy: Fact or Fiction?, presented by Jonathan Frakes, and repeated it twice to rising ratings. It was also shown on Britain's Channel 4 and sold on video. Time magazine compared the debate it sparked to that over the Zapruder film.[1]
Debunking
Critics, including surgeons and special effects experts writing in Skeptical Inquirer, quickly pointed out problems with the film, and several people interviewed in the programme said their doubts had been edited out.[1]
Confession
On 4 April 2006, shortly before the release of a comedy film about the affair, Santilli and fellow producer Gary Shoefield admitted on a Sky documentary that they had made the footage themselves in a flat in Camden, London. Sculptor John Humphreys built two dummy bodies filled with sheep brains, chicken entrails and raspberry jam, and played the chief examiner. The man shown as the original cameraman was a homeless man they had recruited in Los Angeles.[1][2]
Santilli maintained that he had seen genuine footage in 1992 that was later lost, and described parts of his film as "restored". He has never let the original film he says he had be independently tested.[1][3]
