In Above Black, Dan Sherman says he was moved to a second base in what he calls Project Preserve Destiny, where a new "Grey" contact he nicknamed "Bones" was more talkative than the first.[1]
The conversations
According to a summary of the book, Sherman asked Bones how the beings aged, reproduced and travelled, and whether they had souls. He reports answers including that they travel "around time" rather than through it, that any self-aware being must have a soul, that they had visited Earth for a very long time and contributed to some civilisations, and that they live about as long as humans. Sherman says he believed they had interbred with humans, possibly the Basque people.[1]
The end of the exchanges
Sherman says that when he asked Bones about Project Preserve Destiny itself, the being abruptly ended their discussions, and soon afterwards the nature of the communications changed.[1]
Dates
The second assignment must have come before 1994, when Sherman left the Air Force, so the 1995 date sometimes given for it does not fit his own timeline.[2]
Assessment
Sherman's service records may show where he was posted, but nothing confirms the purpose he gives his assignments. He remains the only source.[1][2]
