In a March 2020 article for The War Zone, former Air Force maintainer Stephen Walker described being ordered indoors while an unseen classified aircraft arrived at Diego Garcia during a bomber deployment in 2004–05.[1]
The deployment
Walker served on the Indian Ocean island while Air Combat Command kept a rotation of B-1, B-52 and occasional B-2 bombers there to fly missions over Afghanistan. He noted that the island's isolation had made it the subject of many unfounded rumours, including that his tent city was a CIA "black site".[1]
The hangar
During one week in 2005, Walker wrote, Air Force personnel were told the Navy was conducting sensitive operations from a large, red, run-down hangar at the north end of the airfield, and to stay away. The hangar appeared empty all week. One night the flightline was evacuated and the base locked down, with personnel told to stay inside and away from windows to protect an incoming classified aircraft. About half an hour later they were cleared to return, having heard and seen nothing.[1]
Dyess
Years later, at his home base of Dyess Air Force Base in Texas, an exercise was interrupted by a similar order to clear the flightline for a diverting aircraft no one was allowed to see.[1]
Assessment
Walker did not suggest anything unearthly; the episodes most likely involved classified aircraft. They illustrate how secret flight operations at ordinary bases can generate rumours.[1]
