In an interview with researcher Richard Dolan on 20 May 2021, Luis Elizondo said that some elements had interfered with AATIP's ability to collect and analyse data, but that he had never personally encountered any secret group controlling the subject.[1]
The interview
Asked about claims of a shadowy organisation acquiring UFO data, Elizondo said a very close colleague had told him emphatically that such a body existed and would intimidate people. He said he had no personal experience of it, and joked that this might be because he was seen as too reckless or a "loose cannon", adding that no one had ever tried to intimidate him.[1]
Internal opposition
Elizondo also described conflict with individuals in the Pentagon whose religious beliefs, he said, led them to try to stop work on the subject. He said he was himself deeply religious but did not let that get in the way of seeking the truth. In the same interview he said he was very confident the U.S. government held some very exotic material.[1]
Background
Elizondo has said he ran AATIP until he resigned in October 2017, citing excessive secrecy and internal opposition. The Pentagon has disputed parts of his account of his role. Weeks before the Dolan interview, Politico reported his complaint to the Defense Department inspector general alleging a campaign to discredit him.[2]
Assessment
The claims of interference are Elizondo's own and have not been independently confirmed.[1][2]
