John Greenewald Jr. (born 1980) is an American researcher who founded The Black Vault, an online archive of declassified government documents, in 1996 at the age of 15. Greenewald began by requesting a document he had seen online, which the Defense Intelligence Agency sent him. By 2015 he had filed more than 5,000 requests, and by 2020 his site held more than two million files. Among his best-known results are 129,491 pages of Project Blue Book records posted in 2015; the Navy's September 2019 confirmation to him that its three released videos showed "unidentified aerial phenomena"; and about 2,780 pages of CIA UFO records published in 2021.[1][2][3]

Greenewald publishes not only the documents he obtains but also the government's refusals, delays and redactions, and has campaigned against excessive secrecy. He describes himself as neither a believer nor a debunker, and has criticised both government secrecy and unsupported claims by UFO promoters. He also hosts a podcast and has appeared in television documentaries.[2][4]
