Transmedium describes an object said to move between different environments — for example from space into the atmosphere, or from the air into the sea — without apparent difficulty. Reports of such behaviour are a recurring feature of modern UAP accounts, and since 2021 the term has appeared in U.S. law defining unidentified anomalous phenomena.[1][2]
In law
The fiscal 2022 National Defense Authorization Act broadened the official meaning of UAP to include objects in space and under water. The fiscal 2023 act set out three categories: airborne objects not immediately identifiable; transmedium objects, observed moving between space and the atmosphere or between the atmosphere and bodies of water; and submerged objects not immediately identifiable. The Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) describes its work as covering airborne, seaborne, spaceborne and transmedium detections.[1][2]
Reports

UFO literature has long included accounts of objects entering or leaving water. Among modern accounts, retired rear admiral Tim Gallaudet has said he saw footage of unidentified submerged objects as well as UAP while on active duty.[3]
Caution
The term describes what witnesses or sensors seemed to show, not a confirmed physical crossing from one medium to another. U.S. officials said in 2022 that they had seen no clear indications of transmedium activity by UAP in more recent reports.[1]
