According to Jacques Vallée's journals, on 22 June 1986 engineer James McCampbell told him he had made contact with military pilots from the "Wild Weasel" units, who said their specially equipped aircraft had detected many UFOs.[1]

As quoted by researcher Keith Basterfield, Vallée wrote that McCampbell described the pilots as experts flying F-4 aircraft fitted for electromagnetic detection, designed to locate ground radars and first deployed in the Vietnam War. The story was that they had detected many UFOs and had continued this role in the United States.[1]

Wild Weasel missions, first authorised in 1965 during the Vietnam War, used aircraft carrying radar-warning and homing equipment to find and attack enemy surface-to-air missile sites. F-4G Phantoms flew the role from the late 1970s.[2]

The account is second-hand, from unnamed pilots through McCampbell to Vallée. No records confirm UFO detections by Wild Weasel crews.[1]
