Witness to Roswell: Unmasking the 60-Year Cover-Up is a 2007 book by UFO researchers Thomas J. Carey and Donald R. Schmitt arguing that an alien spacecraft crashed near Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. It is best known for first publishing a sworn statement by Walter Haut, the Roswell base's former public information officer, describing a crashed craft and alien bodies.[1][2]

Published by New Page Books in 2007, the book gathers accounts from people who said they had seen debris, bodies or military activity connected with the Roswell incident. A 75th anniversary edition was later published by Red Wheel/Weiser.[1][3]

The Haut affidavit

Haut had written the July 1947 press release announcing that the Army had recovered a "flying disc". The affidavit published in the book, dated 26 December 2002 and witnessed by a notary, said the weather balloon story was a cover and that Haut had seen the craft and bodies stored by the military. Haut had asked that it be kept private during his lifetime; he died in December 2005, and the full text appeared in June 2007.[1][2]

The affidavit's value is disputed. Researcher Dennis Balthaser, who supports an extraterrestrial explanation of Roswell, wrote that Haut did not write the statement himself but that it had been prepared for his signature, and that neither Carey nor Schmitt was present when he signed it.[1][2]
