JASON is an independent group of elite scientists, mostly physicists, that advises the U.S. government on sensitive scientific and technical questions. Founded around 1960, it has worked on subjects ranging from the Vietnam War to climate change and the "Havana syndrome".[1]

Founding

JASON grew out of a 1958 summer study and a meeting at Los Alamos in December 1959, in the aftermath of the Soviet Sputnik launch. Its founders included physicists John Wheeler and Charles Townes. It has between 30 and 60 members, chosen by the existing members; past members include eleven Nobel laureates, and Claire Max became its first woman member in 1983.[1][2]

Sponsors

Its work has been sponsored by the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy and the intelligence agencies, and is administered by the MITRE Corporation. In 2019 the Pentagon ordered MITRE to end JASON's operations; the Department of Energy stepped in with a temporary contract and, after action by Congress, the Defense Department contract was restored.[1][3]

  • an electronic barrier, the "McNamara Line", during the Vietnam War, and a 1967 report critical of using tactical nuclear weapons there;
  • a 1979 report on global warming caused by carbon dioxide;
  • work on adaptive optics, submarine communication, missile defence and nuclear test monitoring;
  • a review of reports of "anomalous health incidents" (Havana syndrome), which found no compelling evidence that a directed-energy weapon was responsible.[1][4]
