The Scientific Coalition for UAP Studies (SCU) is an American nonprofit group, founded in 2017, of scientists, engineers and other professionals who apply academic methods to the study of unidentified aerial phenomena (UAP). It is best known for a detailed report on the 2004 USS Nimitz "Tic Tac" encounter.[1][2]
Members
The coalition is invitation-only; it had about 170 members in 2021 and about 230 by 2023. Its founding board members include Robert Powell, formerly director of research of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON).[1][3]
The Nimitz report
The SCU published a report of nearly 300 pages on the 2004 encounters between U.S. Navy aircraft from the USS Nimitz and objects tracked on radar off southern California. Its authors analysed the "FLIR1" video, witness testimony and the available radar information. Robert Powell later debated the case with skeptic Mick West.[2][3]
Advocacy
The SCU welcomed the 2021 laws establishing government UAP reporting as historic and urged the government to work with civilian scientists, and it responded in detail to official UAP reports such as the U.S. intelligence community's report of January 2023.[1][4]
