Francis E. Warren Air Force Base is a U.S. Air Force base about 5 km (3 miles) west of Cheyenne, Wyoming, home of the 90th Missile Wing and its Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles. It is described as the oldest continuously active military installation in the Air Force, and is one of the missile bases named by former officers who claim UFOs appeared near nuclear weapons.[1][2]
History

The U.S. Army founded the post in 1867 as Fort D. A. Russell, to protect the building of the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1930 it was renamed Fort Francis E. Warren after Wyoming's first U.S. senator, a Civil War Medal of Honor recipient. The Army Air Forces took it over in 1947, and it became Francis E. Warren Air Force Base on 7 October 1949.[1]
Missiles

- Atlas (1958–1965): the base operated 24 Atlas missile sites, the first declared operational on 9 August 1960.[1]
- Minuteman (from 1963): the 90th Strategic Missile Wing was activated on 1 July 1963 with 200 Minuteman silos; Minuteman III missiles replaced earlier versions after 1974.[1]
- Peacekeeper (1986–2005): 50 Peacekeeper (MX) missiles were installed in former Minuteman silos between 1986 and 1988 and retired between 2002 and 2005.[1]
Today the 90th Missile Wing keeps 150 Minuteman III missiles on alert across about 25,000 km² (9,600 square miles) of Wyoming, Colorado and Nebraska. On 23 October 2010 a hardware failure briefly disrupted communication with 50 of its missiles.[1][3]
UFO claims

At the 2010 National Press Club press conference organised by researcher Robert Hastings, former Air Force officers described UFO incidents at nuclear missile sites including F. E. Warren as well as Malmstrom and Walker Air Force Bases.[2]
