Fort Worth is a large city in Texas. In 1947 it was home to the headquarters of the Eighth Air Force at Fort Worth Army Air Field, which commanded the 509th Bomb Group at Roswell.

On 8 July 1947, after Roswell Army Air Field announced it had found a "flying disc", debris was flown to Fort Worth. In Gen. Roger Ramey's office, reporters were shown torn rubber, foil and sticks, and the material was identified as a weather balloon with a radar reflector. Photos of Ramey and his chief of staff, Col. Thomas DuBose, with the debris became famous. Decades later DuBose said the balloon was a cover story, and researchers have tried to read a message Ramey holds in one photo.
