The Extraterrestrial Highway is the official name of Nevada State Route 375, a 98-mile road through the desert of central Nevada that runs along the northern edge of the Nellis Air Force Range, near Area 51. Nevada gave it the name in 1996 to attract tourists interested in UFOs.[1]

The highway runs from Crystal Springs to U.S. Route 6 at Warm Springs, passing the town of Rachel. It is one of Nevada's least-used roads, with an average of about 200 vehicles a day.[1]

Near Mailbox Road, a dirt track leading towards Area 51, stood a private mailbox, known as the "Black Mailbox" even after it was replaced by a white one. It became a gathering place for UFO watchers, who camped beside it and watched the night sky. Its owner removed it because of repeated vandalism.[1][2]

By the 1990s, Bob Lazar's 1989 claims of alien craft tested near Groom Lake and many books about Area 51 had made the area famous. The Nevada Commission on Tourism renamed the road the Extraterrestrial Highway in February 1996. Twentieth Century Fox used the occasion to promote the film Independence Day, and at a dedication ceremony in Rachel in April 1996, attended by the film's stars, Governor Bob Miller unveiled signs including one reading "Speed Limit Warp 7".[1]
