The Skunk Works astral projection anecdote is a story told by the ufologist Steven Greer in his 2006 book Hidden Truth, Forbidden Knowledge. Greer wrote that an engineer at Lockheed's secret Skunk Works division told him he had learned "astral projection", the claimed ability to move one's consciousness outside the body.[13] While practising, the engineer said, he left his body and saw a UFO in Earth's atmosphere. He told Greer that UFOs often appear in a "dematerialized form", resonating at a frequency beyond the reach of human senses and electronic sensors.[13] Michael Shellenberger's 2024 timeline for Congress repeats the story, citing page 265 of Greer's book. It pairs it with a note on the former Skunk Works fellow Charles Chase, who has spoken about "the energy of thought" in aerospace research.[13] The engineer was not named, and nothing else in the sources read here supports the story.
The anecdote
- Source. The story appears in Hidden Truth, Forbidden Knowledge, published in 2006.[8][13]
- The book combines Greer's claims about suppressed technology with his account of his own contact experiences, which he says began in childhood.[8]
- He describes a near-death experience at 17 that gave him "cosmic consciousness".[8]
- He also describes "Close Encounters of the 5th Kind", contact he says he and groups organised by his Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (CSETI) initiated with extraterrestrials.[8]
- What the engineer said. According to Shellenberger's summary of the book, the Skunk Works engineer:[13]
- had learned astral projection in order to "remove his consciousness from his body";
- left his body during practice and saw a UFO in Earth's atmosphere;
- said UFOs often appear in a "dematerialized form", resonating at a frequency beyond the perception of human senses and electronic sensors.
- Other stories in the book. Shellenberger's timeline lists, under the same date, other unnamed-source claims from the book.[13]
- An E-Systems executive said the company did secret UFO reverse-engineering work funded through shell companies.[13] See E-Systems reverse engineering claim.
- A former Bell Labs worker said he had seen 28 or 29 "free energy devices" that had been "black-shelved".[13]
- The earlier version of this article described the engineer's story as a single anecdote, which it remains.
- Date. The timeline dates these entries to 28 April 2006.[13] The earlier version of this article described the book simply as published in 2006.
Charles Chase
- Background. Shellenberger notes that Charles Chase, a former Lockheed Martin Skunk Works senior technical fellow, worked on exotic propulsion, metamaterials and low-observable (stealth) technology at Lockheed.[13] He says Chase later received a grant from DARPA's QUEST program to support research into propulsion using vacuum fluctuations, an area also studied under the Pentagon's AATIP.[13] See AAWSAP DIRD release.
- UnLAB. Chase runs UnLAB, which hosts an annual "Advanced Propulsion and Energy" collaboration meeting.[10][13]
- The 2019 and 2020 meetings were MIT Independent Activities Period sessions. The third meeting, held online on 26–28 January 2021, was unofficial.[10]
- The organisers describe the meetings as "very exploratory and somewhat speculative", like "an old-fashioned salon".[10]
- Shellenberger describes UnLAB as being "at MIT".[13]
- "Energy of Thought". At the 2021 meeting Chase gave a talk titled "Energy of Thought".[10]
- Other talks included "Power of Intention", "Quantized Inertia", a talk on generating gravitational waves with superconductors, "Casimir Photoinjector", and a talk by the aviation writer Nick Cook on "Anomalous Phenomena & Reality Shifts".[10]
- Shellenberger says Chase "expressed scientific interest in the energy of thought and new ways to utilize human consciousness for aerospace purposes".[13]
- The connection. The earlier version of this article said Shellenberger's testimony links the anecdote to a broader overlap between aerospace engineers and unconventional ideas. That is a fair reading of his juxtaposition. The sources read here do not connect Chase to Greer's unnamed engineer.[13]
Steven Greer and the Disclosure Project

- Greer. Greer, then an emergency-room physician in Virginia, had founded the Disclosure Project in 1993.[3]
- The 2001 press conference. On 9 May 2001 he presented about twenty former military, intelligence, government and corporate witnesses at the National Press Club in Washington.[1][2][3][5]
- He called for congressional hearings and legislation to ban space-based weapons.[2][5]
- He said hundreds of witnesses were willing to testify.[1][2]
- He handed out a 492-page briefing document and a 95-page executive summary.[3]
- That summary claimed alien craft had been retrieved since the 1940s and that reverse engineering had yielded breakthroughs in energy generation.[3]
- Reception. The event drew mixed coverage.[2][7]
- The space consultant James Oberg told ABC News that Greer had long promoted a "bizarre theory" of a worldwide cabal using UFO technology. Oberg added that the witnesses should not be mocked.[1]
- The journalist Leslie Kean, who had worked with Greer, was uneasy when a speaker made unsupported claims about alien bodies instead of presenting hard data.[3]
- Supporters complained of a "deafening silence" in the mainstream press.[7]
Assessment
- Unverified. The anecdote comes from an unnamed engineer, as relayed by Greer. No date, program or other witness is given in the sources read here.[13]
- No program. The earlier version of this article said there is no evidence that Lockheed used astral projection in any program. None of the sources read here suggests that it did.
- Context. Claims linking consciousness to UFOs run through Greer's work, from his CSETI contact sessions to his book.[8] Shellenberger's timeline sets the story beside other claims of a link between aerospace research and unconventional ideas about the mind.[13]
