John Baughman, a former U.S. Navy petty officer who served from 2008 to 2013, says that in January 2010, while the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson was off Haiti after the devastating earthquake, he saw a white object shaped like a "Tic Tac", about 20 feet long, under the water beside the ship before it quickly left.[1][2]

The account

Baughman told his story publicly in 2021. He says he was on a short break, sitting with his legs over the edge of the ship's SAM launcher deck and looking into the sea, when the object appeared below him and darted away. He says he reported it to a supervisor, who dismissed it, and that he decided to speak out after hearing former Navy pilots David Fravor and Alex Dietrich describe the 2004 Nimitz "Tic Tac" encounter. He has acknowledged that "it could have been just about anything".[1][2]

The Carl Vinson's Haiti mission is well documented. On 12 January 2010, hours after the earthquake, the carrier was ordered to divert from a deployment in the Atlantic to Haiti, where it arrived within days to provide helicopters, water and medical support for relief operations, departing in February.[3]

Baughman's description echoes the 2004 Nimitz encounter, which was made public in 2017. Reports of objects moving underwater near Navy ships have since been raised in Congress, and the Pentagon's All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office includes "transmedium" objects in its remit. The sighting rests on Baughman's account alone.[2][4]
