The CHANI Project — "Channelled Holographic Access Network Interface" — is an anonymous story, published in the Australian alternative magazine Nexus in 2011, about a secret research program that supposedly communicated with an entity from a parallel universe through a machine in the 1990s.[1][2]
The story
According to the article, the work was carried out by an unnamed group using the pseudonym "RAND and Associates" at an underground, CERN-like particle-collider facility in Africa whose location remained "still classified". The researchers had access to the facility from 1994 to 1999. They said they never used a human channeller; instead, a device captured and displayed words from an entity that claimed to come from a parallel universe, dimension or timeline. Over about five years they said they asked more than 20,000 questions and received answers to over 95 percent of them, covering science, history and the future.[1]
The end
The article says upgrades to make the facility's systems Year 2000-compliant affected the project, that contact with the entity was lost on 14 November 1999, and that the research ended in April 2000. Extracts of the supposed messages were later published and circulated widely online.[1]
Connections

The testimony places CHANI among claims circulating in UFO and fringe circles, near Jacques Vallée's journal accounts of the "Secret Onion" — a Washington group of government scientists and contractors in the mid-1980s that Vallée described as layered like an onion, with secrecy increasing towards the core. Nothing documents a connection between the two.[3]
Assessment
No documents, named researchers or facility support the CHANI story, and it is generally regarded as a hoax or fiction.[1][2]
