Australian journalist Ross Coulthart reported in his 2021 book In Plain Sight that Nat Kobitz, a former U.S. Navy director of technology, told him he had been "read into" a program involving crashed UFOs.[1]

According to Coulthart, Kobitz was 92 and terminally ill when they spoke, and enjoyed telling long stories. When Coulthart asked whether he had been read into a program involving crashed UFOs, Kobitz answered yes. He also said he had seen an unusual piece of titanium alloy at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, several feet long, which he thought could not have been made on Earth. Kobitz died shortly after the conversations.[1]

Critic Jason Colavito pointed out that when Coulthart asked about recovered UFOs, Kobitz also said he had only hearsay information, and argued that both statements could not be true. He described the metal story as the recollection of a dying man decades after the fact, with nothing to support it.[1]

Coulthart himself wrote that his sources had not seen hard evidence of extraterrestrial technology and that their statements proved little, but concluded from the number of insiders dropping hints that non-human technology had probably been recovered.[1]

Assessment

The claim rests on Coulthart's account of private conversations, and no Navy record supports it.[1]
