In 1947 a missile launched from White Sands Proving Ground went off course and crashed near Juárez, Mexico, causing a diplomatic incident. Later in October 1947, reports described an unknown missile crashing in Mexico, and U.S. officials were said to be seeking the wreckage. Homer was involved in the military response to rocket crashes in the region. The episode is sometimes linked to UFO claims, though it is more likely connected to the early U.S. rocket program.
