Anthony O. Mirarchi was a scientist at the U.S. Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories who helped plan Project Twinkle, the 1949–51 effort to study the "green fireballs" and other unexplained lights over New Mexico.
Going public
After leaving government service, Mirarchi told reporters in February 1951 that the government's balloon explanations were misleading the public, and that the fireballs and some other objects showed signs of controlled motion. He suggested they might be Soviet spy devices and warned that the U.S. should take them seriously. His remarks contradicted the Navy's Urner Liddel, who said the same week that balloons explained the best sightings. He was reportedly criticised and investigated for speaking out.
