In the early 1950s, Riedel was associated with Civilian Saucer Investigation, a Los Angeles group founded in 1951 to study flying saucer reports scientifically. He was quoted in the press saying he believed saucers were real and might come from outside Earth. A CIA officer later admitted monitoring a public UFO meeting in Los Angeles in 1953, showing intelligence interest in such groups.
