In 1955, Witten joined the Research Institute for Advanced Study (RIAS), set up by the Glenn L. Martin Company in Baltimore, where he studied gravity. The company's interest in gravity research was reported in the press that year. Witten later said the research was pure theoretical physics, without any secret anti-gravity aims. His account is often cited in discussions of whether 1950s corporate gravity research was secretly continued. He later taught at the University of Cincinnati.
