William Blaine Richardson III (15 November 1947 – 1 September 2023) was an American politician and diplomat who served as a congressman, U.N. ambassador, Energy Secretary and Governor of New Mexico. As governor he publicly said the Roswell incident had never been adequately explained and called for any remaining records to be released.[1][2]

Richardson was born in Pasadena, California. He represented New Mexico's 3rd congressional district from 1983 to 1997, was U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations in 1997–1998 and Secretary of Energy from 1998 to 2001, and served as Governor of New Mexico from 2003 to 2011. He sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, withdrawing in January and later endorsing Barack Obama.[1]

In August 2004 Richardson wrote the foreword to The Roswell Dig Diaries, a book about the Roswell case published with the Sci Fi Channel. He wrote that the mystery of the crash had never been adequately explained, and an aide said he wanted either to debunk the story or to encourage full disclosure of any unreleased records. The foreword was ridiculed by some scientists and skeptics. During his 2008 presidential campaign he again said he would seek the truth about Roswell if elected.[2][3][4]
