Project Aquarius is the name of an alleged top-secret U.S. government UFO program described in a document that surfaced in the early 1980s and is widely regarded as fake. The document, presented as a U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) message, also contains one of the earliest references to "MJ Twelve", the supposed secret UFO committee later known as Majestic 12.[1][2]

The document

The document is dated 17 November 1980 and is presented as a teletype message from AFOSI. It circulated among UFO researchers from the early 1980s, and is linked to AFOSI agent Richard Doty at Kirtland Air Force Base and to the disinformation directed at Albuquerque businessman Paul Bennewitz, who believed he was monitoring alien activity near the base.[1]

Doubts

Researcher Kevin Randle has argued that the Aquarius message appears to be a genuine AFOSI teletype that was retyped with the MJ-12 reference added, making that reference fraudulent.[1][2]

The real Project Aquarius

Researcher John Greenewald of The Black Vault obtained declassified reports from 1970 on a real project named Aquarius, which concerned ocean surveillance and had nothing to do with UFOs. He argues that the name was borrowed by the hoaxer and labels the MJ-12 Aquarius material a hoax.[3]
